We Are OPEN For Issue #7 Submissions

LITERARY MAGAZINE EXCLUSIVE

Communities don’t grow by accident. They are built over time by people who choose to create spaces for others to belong.

Anyone who has volunteered/worked on literary magazines, zines, journals, presses, reviews, or similar publications has devoted countless hours to creating opportunities for the arts to thrive. In reverence and in thanks, Issue #7 seeks to give space and recognize the people who have inspired and supported our community.

This call is EXCLUSIVELY open to people who have volunteered/worked on a publication.

ALL Submissions Will Be Reviewed Blind

As we pride ourselves on being a part of this wonderful community, there are some names we will inevitably recognize. Blind submissions allow everyone a fair chance to submit their work without potential favouritism (including our own volunteers). So PLEASE, don't include any identifying material inside your submission(s). If you have any questions regarding this, please DM us on Instagram or send us an email before you submit.

Submission Guidelines

What We Accept

  • Fantasy, Horror, and Sci-Fi

  • Previously unpublished writing and visual art (we ask for First Electronic Rights)

  • Simultaneous submissions are perfectly fine. Just send us an email to withdraw if you're accepted elsewhere

  • We will accept writing in languages other than English as long as there is an English translation attached

    • Exception: titles don't need translations, but if you'd like to include one, that's fine too

Submission Limits

  • for PROSE — you can submit up to 2 prose pieces in separate files per open call, with a limit of 5,000 words (or within reason) per piece

  • for POETRY — you can submit up to 5 poems in separate files, with a limit of 5 pages (or within reason)

  • for VISUAL ART — you can submit up to 10 pieces

Formatting

  • File types

    • for WRITING — .doc or .docx

    • for VISUAL ART — .png or .jpeg (300 DPI/High Resolution)

  • Writing Submission Formatting

    • for PROSE — 12 pt. legible font, indented paragraphs, double-spaced lines, quotation marks for dialogue

    • for POETRY — 12 pt. legible font, single-spaced

                                    — Poets, our published paper size is 6" x 9". If lines overflow, some reformatting may be needed

                                    — If your poem requires visual elements, please submit it as visual art.

What We Will Not Accept

  • We will not review or publish any hatred toward any marginalized group, graphic depictions of sexual violence, literary fiction, previously published pieces, or AI-generated content.

Hard Sells

  • On-page sexual content

    • We aren't opposed to publishing mild/mentions of off-page sexual content, but if the story reads the same with it as it does without it, we'd prefer it without. If you do choose to give us work that includes this, please give us a content warning.

  • Excerpts

    • While we will read an excerpt from a larger unpublished piece, we strongly prefer stories that can stand on their own.

Please Note

As Alive Journal takes no fee for submissions, nor does it make any profit from the publication of them.

This means that, unfortunately, we are not a paying market for our authors and artists at this time.
